On Saturday, Klaipėda’s streets were flooded with the Festival of Lights which started in the previous week. The weekend, dedicated to words of love to a neighbour and the homeland, was urging to write love poems, admire the Fountain of Love, listen to sensuous music, and get excited about images of olden Klaipėda. Crowds of happy and smiling citizens filled the streets and squares of the Old Town, and you could have mistaken it for a big summer festival.

The main project of the weekend was the greetings of citizens to a neighbour and the homeland, which will still be shown on the tower of Klaipėda’s Musical Theatre today. On 14 February, the festival’s attendees were invited to confess their love to those dear to them. Throughout the night, from 6 to 11 p.m., 950 text messages were sent, and the Facebook wall of Jūros šventė was filled with tens of posts.

The authors of the confession of love were not short of creativity:

„I love six women: Lithuania, Klaipėda, my mother, wife, daughter, and another daughter. Let us smile more and rejoice – that is the only way to improve our and Lithuania‘s health. Happy holidays, my dear Lithuania and others.

“L.M., I love you, because with you I am happy. I love Your smile, your dimples, your blue eyes, which make me forget all about my troubles. I love You because it is you who makes my heart beat faster and stronger. For my love, with love, and from love.”

“You have given me cozy evenings and mornings, the moon and its fullness. I promise to give you the stars, shining bright and making wishes come true. There is nothing more beautiful than you.”

At times the tower lit up with words “marry me”, “be mine”, “forever yours”. Those who were in for a fun evening were saluting their colleagues, superiors, were asking for a holiday, and were joking in other ways to try and talk about issues relevant to them.

Today, on 15 February, Klaipėda’s citizens are invited to salute their homeland, thus commemorating the 16 February, the Day of the Restoration of Lithuania's Independence. Love poems again can be written in two ways: either on the Facebook wall of Jūros šventė, or by sending a message to 1670 with the word KLAIPEDA and your text after a space. The messages received will light up the tower of Klaipėda’s National Musical Theatre, while the whole building will be lit with the colours of the tricolor of the Republic of Lithuania.

Klaipėda’s bridges, Danė embankments, and surrounding buildings will gladden Klaipėda’s citizens as they will be brighter than ever. A projection of the movie “Klapėdos laiko tiltai” (Eng. Klaipėda’s Bridges of Time) on the wall of Biržos Bridge will bring back the past. A fountain of lights and sounds will be waiting in Theatre Square, and will immerse you in colours and the music of dreamy sounds. “Luminous Sky” by the Eduardas Balsys Art School will once again invite you to admire it. On the last day of the two-weekend-long Festival of Lights, you will once again be invited to listen to stories about Klaipėda‘s Old Town told by experienced tour guides who will be waiting for citizens at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Karlskrona Square by the ship “Meridianas”.

MOMENTS OF THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS (FEBRUARY 6-7)

 ***

THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS HAS TAKEN OVER KLAIPĖDA

Friday evening saw the start of the first Klaipėda‘s Festival of Lights, which lured numerous citizens and guests to the city centre. The weekend, named “Different Side of Klaipėda‘s Old Town“, citizens were invited to explore their loved hometown showing different colours.

From 6 p.m., when the beginning of the festival was announced with a luminous and resonant procession, until the late evening the city centre was filled with people. A lot of attention was attracted by one of the main projections of the first weekend which was being shown on the wall of the bar “Žvejų baras“. The video projection, specifically for the event, told the story of the Old Town, and was praised by the young and the old. The organisers of the projection also told that, contrary to other cities, people in Klaipėda would come to admire the projection a few times, and would return after leaving.

A myriad of colourful illuminations woke the buildings in Turgus street from hibernation. “I wish it was like this all the time. The city looks incredible, simply magical”, a citizen named Virginija was saying. A luminous installation named “The Lighthouse of Colours”, which was complemented by a special pulsing soundtrack, emerged in the stadium of the Klaipėda Faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts.

The festival’s attendees could admire an audiovisual piece “Paskutinis bastionas” (Eng. “The Last Bastion”) on the inner wall of Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre. The Theatre Square was decorated with illuminations on the façade of the Drama theatre, which are only used on special occasions, whilst luminous sails lit the Danė embankments.
The Art Courtyard of the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre was lit by a sky of lanterns created by the Eduardas Balsys Art School, and the citizens who visited the Courtyard where whispering that they wish they could hang such lanterns in their houses. “The Mystery of Lights”, which was shown only once, at 7 p.m. in Dienovidis Square, opened the imagination and encouraged to interpret what was in sight.

Well-spirited citizens and guests who registered prior to the tour, willingly explored Klaipėda with the guides of the night tours. The big groups of people comprised of both children and adults were given flashlights, using which they created their own cozy “illuminations”. The night tours will also be given this evening, on 7 February, as well as next weekend, 14-15 February.

The Festival of Lights has received a lot of interest from the community of Old Town businesspeople as well. Cafes, restaurants, tourism agencies, and children’s playrooms were more than happy to get involved in luminous activities. Candles, lasers, lanterns and other original light installations were seen in windows on the first night of the festival, and cafes were inviting everyone to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in an unconventionally lit environment. An equally adventurous programme will be waiting for citizens on Saturday, hence, organisers are expecting those who did not get a chance to admire the installations of the Festival of Lights on Friday to visit Klaipėda on Saturday. They will be able to do so from 6 p.m. and are welcome to explore the city until the end of the inaugural Festival of Lights. The festival is expected to end at 11 p.m. on Saturday.

The festival, which started on the weekend, will invite you to the streets of Klaipėda next weekend, 14-15 February. The weekend, dedicated to “Love Poems for a Neighbour and the Homeland”, will brighten up the city even more. During the second weekend of the festival, Klaipėda‘s citizens and guests will be invited to express their love for a neighbour and the homeland, and the love letters will be displayed broadcast on the tower of Klaipėda‘s Musical Theatre. During the Weekend of Love, Klaipėda‘s bridges and Danė embankments will come alive with the help of lights, and Theatre Square will invite you to see the fountain of lights and sounds.

THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS WILL INVITE YOU TO DISCOVER A DIFFERENT KLAIPĖDA

In order to make the dark period more lively, to present Lithuania’s and Klaipėda’s historical events in a new and innovative fashion, to introduce citizens and Klaipėda’s guests to the port city’s architecture in an appealing way, February will see the inaugural KLAIPĖDA’S FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS.

The Festival of Lights in Klaipėda will take place on 6-16 February, that is, for two weekends, from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. The project embodies a few goals: to present the festival as an opportunity for innovative projects, to modernise the commemoration of traditional holidays, to appeal to the youth culture, and, most importantly, to ensure a dialogue between artists and the community. “Klaipėda’s Festival of Lights will be comprised of projects specifically designed for the city by which we want to awaken the beauty of the city, to invite people to enjoy the nightlife as well as get excited. As the projections and light installations are rather expensive, most countries organize light festivals for a weekend only. In some instances, one of the projections for the festivals cost as much as our entire city budget,” to questions about Klaipėda’s Festival of Lights answered Goda Giedraitytė, the creative director for “Klaipėdos Šventės”.

Different Side of Klaipėda’s Old Town

Klaipėda’s Festival of Lights will start with a bright and loud procession on the evening of 6 February which will begin at Klaipėda’s Tourism Information Centre. The luminous and resonant theatrical procession will announce the start of the Festival of Lights in Klaipėda. The cozy and prosperous Old Town of Klaipėda will change its usual image for two days and will become “Different Side of Klaipėda’s Old Town”. One of the main projections of the first weekend will be shown on the building of “Žvejų baras”, which currently is at 8 Kurpiai street. The specially made animation will invite you to explore the history of Klaipėda‘s Old Town.

A myriad of colourful illuminations woke the buildings in Turgus street from hibernation, whilst in the stadium of the Klaipėda Faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts an original luminous installation will emerge. On the map of the first weekend of the Festival of Lights lie various projects created or shown in the territories of the History Museum of Lithuania Minor and the Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre. A luminous sky of lanterns will be given to the city by the Eduardas Balsys Art School. Those who wish to explore the luminous objects and discover unfamiliar places in the Old Town will be invited to register for one of the night tours.

Weekend of Love Poems

During the second weekend of the Festival of Lights, 14-15 February, Klaipėda’s citizens and guests will be invited to tell the city their love stories. The weekend, called “Love Poems for a Neighbour and the Homeland”, will not be short of innovative projects and ideas. On 14 February, the romance of the day of love will be spread around by a luminous procession. The main project of the weekend of love will take place on Klaipėda’s Musical Theatre, where on the tower of the building citizens and guests’ greetings, sent by text message or posted on the Facebook wall of “Jūros šventė”, will be displayed. On 14 February, the festival’s attendees will be invited to express their love to a person dear to them, and on 15 February, they will be encouraged to salute their homeland. Those who wish to post their greetings on the Facebook wall of “Jūros šventė” will be able to use the free wireless network which will be provided in Atgimimas Square by the telecommunications company TEO. All those writing love poems will be invited to take a seat in the luminous alley of the Benches of Love. During the Weekend of Love, Klaipėda‘s bridges and Danė embankments will come alive with the help of lights, and Theatre Square will invite you to see the fountain of lights and sounds.

According to the organisers of the festival, private initiatives of the city’s communities and Klaipėda Old Town business people are becoming a beautiful tradition. The Old Town’s cafes, restaurants, and cultural establishments are getting involved in the Festival of Lights and have promised to amaze everyone with luminous surprises.
