Klaipeda is only Lithuania’s sea gateway to the world and the capital of the west of Lithuania.

Klaipeda, the oldest city in Lithuania, will celebrate 765 aniversary in 2017. City is popular with investors and foreign partners because of its attractive and competitive conditions to develop industry and promote small and medium businesses.

Klaipeda will become increasingly important because of its direct links with other European and world-wide ports and because it is a sea transport centre, where regular shipping lines and fast modern motorway routes merge together.

Tourism is becoming increasingly important to Klaipeda and its hinterland and major investments are being made to promote it. The newly opened passenger cruise terminal, close to the City centre, will bring increased traffic to the area in the years to come.

Klaipeda has a population of around 200,000. It has direct motorway links with Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius (310 km) and the second city of Kaunas (220 km). Klaipeda hosted Tall Ships three times: in 2009, 2011 and 2015 with over a million visitors and spectators.

Five ports are hosting the annual Tall Ships Races in 2017, taking place across the Baltic Sea. Between them they have experience of eleven Tall Ships Races and Regattas and are eager to welcome the international fleet.

Knut Western, Chairman of Tall Ships Races (Europe) said, “All of our selected host ports have already earned an excellent reputation for delivering our events. Over previous years they have all demonstrated their ability to look after sail training Tall Ships and put the development and education of young people, through the adventure of being at sea, at the heart of their bids.”

Halmstad, Sweden is located in the middle of Scandinavia’s most expansive region. It offers a variety of arts and entertainment, a charming town centre and a strong history of arranging successful events.

Kotka, Finland is a city by the sea, located on the estuary of the river Kymijoki. It has long experience of arranging large-scale international events. The event will focus on the beautiful island of Kotkansaari in the centre of Kotka, and around the City Port.

Turku, Finland has a thousand-year history. The ships’ route through the archipelago is spectacular before being brought right into the middle of Turku on the banks of the River Aura.

Klaipeda, Lithuania is the centre of business, industry, culture and science of Western Lithuania and won the Council of Europe Prize 2003 for international cooperation. They are looking forward to opening their sea gates to the Tall Ships fleet for the third time and the grand finale to their city would be unforgettable.

Szczecin, Poland has a deep commitment to sail training. Offering access to the Baltic Sea and Odra River it is ideally positioned as both a port city and a gateway tourist destination. The forests, nature reserves, lakes and shorelines surrounding the city create a unique environment.


The idea of an international race for sail training ships, manned by crews drawn from cadets and seamen under training, was first discussed informally in 1953. Retired London Solicitor, Bernard Morgan, had the dream of seeing a Brotherhood of the Sea, which would bring together the youth of the world’s seafaring people in friendly competition. He believed this would be a fitting way to mark what was considered to be the end of the age of sail. The idea found particular favour with the Portuguese Ambassador to the UK, Dr Pedro Theotónio Pereira, who believed that a race could foster good relations and understanding between young people of different countries.

The more Morgan and Pereira talked about the idea, the more sympathetic ears they found, firing the imaginations of many, including in Britain Earl Mountbatten, the First Sea Lord, and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. The Sail Training International Race Committee was established and plans were made for a race between Torbay in the UK and Lisbon in Portugal in July 1956.

Twenty vessels took part in that first race, divided into two classes, those over 100 tons and those under.
The over 100 tons were: Moyana (UK), Christian Radich (Norway), Ruyam (Turkey), Falken (Sweden), Maybe (Netherlands), Gladan (Sweden), Flying Clipper (Sweden), Creole (UK), Sørlandet (Norway), Georg Stage (Denmark), Sagres (Portugal), Mercator (Belgium).
The ships under 100 tons were: Artica II (Italy), Juana (Argentina), Sereine (France), Marabu (UK), Bellatrix (Portugal), Theodora (UK), Provident (UK) and Berenice (UK).

The Argentinean yacht Juana was the first across the finishing line, but on corrected time – racing systems were around even then – the British Moyana was the winner overall, beating the Norwegian Christian Radich into second place.

Disaster struck on the way back to Southampton, however, when Moyana got into difficulties in a storm and sank. All 23 officers and crew were taken off safely and they even had the presence of mind to take their winning trophy off with them!

That first race was only planned to be a one-off, but it attracted such huge press coverage, particularly in the countries of the vessels taking part, that the Committee decided to repeat the event in 1958 and thereafter every second year. So the Sail Training International Race Committee became a permanent body, changing over the years through its incarnations as STA, ISTA and finally back to its roots as Sail Training International today.

The race series typically attracts 70-100 sail training vessels, providing an opportunity for the young trainee crews to mix with their contemporaries from other nations and visit new communities. The Tall Ships Races are held every summer in European waters, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.

The Races usually comprise four ports with a race between port one and two, a social Cruise-in-Company between Ports two and three and a second race between ports three and four. Each port organises a programme of social, sports and cultural events and activities for the trainee crews. The final day in port includes a crew parade through the streets and a prize-giving. The arrival of the ships, berthing, undocking and the Parade of Sail are all handled by each port’s harbourmaster, while a system of volunteer liaison officers, organised by local people, look after each vessel and its crew.



Klaipeda is the Northernmost ice-free port in the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, the third largest city and the only port in Lithuania.The city was founded in 1252 by the Livonian Order. It is the oldest city in Lithuania and one of the oldest in the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Klaipeda has excellent road, rail and sea links to Latvia, Kaliningrad region (Russian Federation), Scandinavia and Central Europe.

The official language is Lithuanian, but many citizens speak foreign languages including English, German and Russian. Lithuania is ranked among five EU countries with the highest percentage of people speaking at least one foreign language. Klaipeda astonishes with its rich cultural life. And is the host for international events like the “Baltic Tall Ship Races“, “International Castle Jazz Festival”.


The closest airport – Palanga International Airport is located on the Northern boundary of Klaipeda, within a 30 min. drive. The airport and Klaipeda are connected by the internationally significant road that extends from Liepaja (Latvia) to Klaipeda.

The International Ferry Port in the city connects Klaipeda with the ports of Kiel in Germany and Karlshamn in Sweden.

The Klaipeda Bus Station provides passenger transport on regular routes within the city area, local area and between the cities. There is a possibility to take a bus from Klaipeda to Germany, France, Great Britain, The Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia, The Kaliningrad region or Poland.

Single tickets are distributed in the office of the PI “Klaipėdos keleivinis transportas”, kiosks of the company “Lietuvos spauda” and other sale places owned by different physical persons and legal entities. Single tickets are also sold in any bus.

Accreditation of ,,The Tall Ships Races 2017“ (Klaipeda) is provided for a term up 26 of July to 2 of August.

Accreditations must be delivered by 20 July 2017.

Accreditation is also possible during the event at the media centre.

To receive an accreditation a foreign journalist shall personally e-mail mediaaccreditation@seafestival.lt


In order to receive the accreditation a foreign journalist submits:

  1. a filled-in accreditation form;
  2. photographs of the present age of the applicant.
  3. All the documents should be submitted in Lithuanian or English.


Our port will organise a limited number of press boat to take photographers and film crews out to sea during the Tall Ships Parade and for the race start. If you are interested in booking a place on a press boat you will need to register in accreditation form.
